O, Come Let Us Adorn Thee

Brilliant Churches, Temples, and Mosques

Places of prayer have much in common. Over the past few years, I’ve had the blessing to travel to some of the most religious places in the world. One of the most impressive things I’ve learned is that, regardless of religion, followers adorn their places of worship in much the same way.

Places of Prayer Around the World

Each of the places of prayer I have visited on my travels,  — despite their differences — has shown their reverence for a divine entity. Whether it’s mosaics, sculptures, or tapestries, how a place of worship is adorned reflects the community’s cultural core. From impressive stained glass windows in cathedrals to the ring of meditation balls in temples, each religious symbol inspires a sense of humility and respect

Enjoy some of the brilliant churches, temples, and mosques of France, Italy, Turkey, and Nepal and embrace their similarities.

Places of Prayer: Intentionally Ornate

While many wonder why places of prayer, such as temples, churches, mosques, and synagogues, are adorned with elaborate ornamentation and intricate designs, there are simple explanations. The intricate carvings, colorful frescoes, and beautiful stained glass windows are intended to inspire a feeling of sacredness when worshippers enter the space. They are reminded they are in the presence of a divine entity.

Simply, the embellishments honor and glorify the deity worshipped in that space. Ornate architecture and artistic details are considered offerings of the highest order, symbolizing the worthiness of the honored one.

The historical significance of the place of worship has much to do with how elaborate it appears, too. Many churches and templates are centuries ancient– built and expanded over centuries. With each generation adding its artistic contributions, the architecture, and decoration may be ostentatious to some, but it reflects the community’s heritage and local craftsmanship.

Last but not least important, the grandeur of these religious structures acts as a way to attract and engage worshippers. It draws people in and helps them find solace and kinship in the sacred space. It elevates the religious experience and fosters a sense of spiritual connection among believers.

  1. Great pics. Don’t forget to check out the church in the centre of Isle sur la Sorgue. It looks nothing from the outside but step inside…..

    • I think I tried to go inside the church in Isle Sur la Sorgue and it was closed. I’ll try again! Thanks for the reminder. Have a very happy holiday and thanks for keeping in touch.
